Panera Bread in Bristol and Rebecca Lobo Partner for ‘Pink Ribbon Bagel’

Shop Rite Plaza

Panera Bread has partnered with Rebecca Lobo, basketball analyst, Olympic athlete, former WNBA and UCONN player, to support the Connecticut Cancer Foundation (CCF), formerly the Connecticut Sports Foundation, during its 16th annual ‘Pink Ribbon Bagel’ promotion.

Throughout the month of October, a portion of proceeds from all Pink Ribbon Bagels sold will go toward helping the CCF assist local families battling breast cancer with rent/mortgage, utilities, transportation, medications and more. Patients are referred to CCF through a network of oncology social workers at Connecticut hospitals and cancer centers.

The Lobo partnership, now in its fifth year, kicked off October 1st to commemorate national Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lobo, a recent inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, is the daughter of RuthAnn Lobo, a long-time breast cancer survivor who lost her battle in 2011 after living with the disease for 18 years.

In 2001, Rebecca launched the RuthAnn and Rebecca Lobo Scholarship for Hispanic students admitted to the UCONN School of Allied Health. As part of the Panera Bread partnership, the RuthAnn Lobo Award in Social Work was established in 2013 to support educating the next generation of hospital-based social workers working with cancer patients.

During the month-long fundraiser, a portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel purchased at Panera Bread cafes in Connecticut will go directly to the Connecticut Cancer Foundation. Pink Ribbon Bagels are baked fresh daily in each Panera Bread café, formed by hand into a ribbon shape, and feature dried cherries, cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar.

Participating Connecticut locations are located in Bristol, Canton, Enfield, Farmington, Foxwoods Resort & Casino, Glastonbury, Groton, Hartford, Lisbon, Manchester, Newington, Southington, South Windsor, Waterford, West Hartford, and Wethersfield.

The Stan Simpson Show: A political shift in Connecticut; Looking ahead to 2018 Gubernatorial race

HARTFORD —  CT’s Democratic’ party – once thought to be slumping, picked up some momentum after the recent local elections. Democrats now control the councils in Republican strongholds such as Farmington, Glastonbury and Southington. They also regained the majority in the predominantly Democratic city of New Britain. So, what does this mean for next year’s highly anticipated state gubernatorial and legislative elections? In CT, Republicans have evolved from a political after-thought in the legislature to near -equity with Democrats. J.R. Romano […]

Anthem and Hartford HealthCare reach contract agreement

HARTFORD – Hartford HealthCare and Anthem insurance have finally reached an agreement. The three-year agreement was announced after 2 a.m. Saturday morning.  It will restore in-network access to Hartford HealthCare`s physicians, facilities, programs and services. Since October 1st, when the two companies failed to reach a new agreement, 60,000 patients began paying “out-of-network” prices for their regular doctor care.  But the contract is retroactive to October 1st, so those  patients should only end up paying what they would have paid as if […]

Malloy holds back state funds to cities and towns

HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is holding back funds to state agencies and municipalities to cover an estimated $881.6 million gap built into the newly passed, two-year $41.3 billion budget. The Democrat’s fiscal office announced Friday that the bulk of the $881.6 million — $700 million — will come from expected savings from the state employee labor concession agreement. But Malloy’s plan reduces state aid to cities and towns by $91 million, a move Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz […]

Would have liked to see this at the beginning of the month. I would have definitely supported the cause.
