Burlington and Harwinton Schools Plan 18 Layoffs During Budget Crisis

Burlington Town Hall

BURLINGTON — Alan Beitman Superintendent of schools told parents “As you know Regional School District #10 (Burlington and Harwinton) continues to face serious financial pressure from the State of Connecticut this year and a possible reduction of a similar proportion for the next several years.”

A recent Board of Education meeting directed Beitman to make reductions in conjunction with the Board of Education’s Finance Committee.

“As part of the reductions, a major reorganization of our administrative staff was undertaken. This reorganizational plan will allow us to continue moving forward as a high-performing district, addressing the needs of students, parents and staff.” added Beitman.

NBC CT reported the school system is planning to cut at least $1.6 million from its annual budget and to lay off at least 18 staff in the coming weeks.

Beitman expressed frustration with the continuing budget impasse and the mixed messages coming from legislators and the governor regarding funds for education, and added, “just tell us what the bottom line is. Let us at least deal with it.”

Beitman told FOX61 “He’s running out of options with over $1.6 millions in cuts taking place already. He did say who your child has a teacher now will continue to be their teacher in June. Layoffs will include 18-25 non-certified positions, and they will not fill 9 open positions to help save on the $1.6 million they are losing.

The Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents said that uncertainty about the state budget had schools delaying the rehiring of non-tenured teachers and, sometimes, losing them as a result. One district has 50 teachers in limbo, the association said, another is delaying the start of school a week, and others put off repairs usually done over the summer.

Hartford council authorizes mayor to seek state oversight

HARTFORD — Hartford’s city council has approved a proposal to apply for state oversight in exchange for tens of millions of dollars needed to help the city balance its budget. The Hartford Courant reports the move was requested by Democratic Mayor Luke Bronin. The council approved it Monday. Some council members had resisted the plan, saying it would undermine the power of local government. But they said it became unavoidable as the potential for bankruptcy loomed. Hartford’s $611 million budget currently has […]

Sean Spicer announces he’s writing a book

WASHINGTON DC — Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer is writing a book to “set the record straight” about what he says happened during the 2016 election, transition and his time serving in the administration. “I looked back at the coverage of the campaign, the transition in the first six, seven months of this White House, I realized the stories that are being told are not an accurate representation of what President Trump went through to get the nomination, […]

The brain benefits of your child’s dinosaur obsession

The brain benefits of your child’s dinosaur obsession

NEW YORK — Susan Alloway’s daughter Erin was very specific about her Halloween costume. It couldn’t be just any dinosaur: Erin, 6, wanted to be an Ozraptor. For the record, an Ozraptor is an abelisauroid theropod dinosaur that lived in modern-day Australia during the Middle Jurassic period. It’s also definitely not something a mom can buy off the rack at Party City. “I Googled it, and there’s nothing,” Alloway says. “There’s like two pictures of an Ozraptor. But she said […]

North Korea may be making a fortune from bitcoin mania

PYONGYANG — Speculators aren’t the only ones cheering the runaway bitcoin boom — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may also be celebrating a windfall. In recent months, experts and officials say North Korea has been “mining” bitcoin, demanding it as ransom payment and outright stealing the digital currency. “It is a fact that North Korea has been attacking virtual currency exchanges,” said Lee Dong-geun, a director with South Korea’s state-run Korea Internet and Security Agency. “We don’t know how much North Korea has stolen so far, […]
