Earlier this week Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), said there was “no litmus test” to run as a Democrat.
This means that the DCCC will support anti-choice candidates.
Progressive Democrats call on the Democratic Party to support the health of all women, and to support the ability of women to make the healthcare decisions that are right for them, with the support of their doctors and their families.”
The impact of anti-choice laws in states like Texas makes clear the disastrous impacts these have on low income women and women of color in particular.
“If the Democratic Party supports equality, it must support full access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, for every person, regardless of their income and the state that they live in. This must include striking down economically damaging policies such as the Hyde Amendment.”
“The United States has the worst rate of maternal deaths in the developed world. This rate reflects an overall lack of access to reproductive healthcare and a lack of focus on women’s health. We call on our Democratic politicians to make firm commitments to women’s health. No politician should impose purely ideological beliefs on public policy.”
“As progressives, we call on the DCCC and our state Democratic Party, to support a Pro-Choice Statement of Principles.”
The Statement of Principles makes clear the fact that abortion is not simply a fringe issue tied to “identity politics.” Abortion rights are integral to women’s economic security and bodily freedom.

Supporters of the press conference today released the following statements:
“Abortion access is one of the policies that helps strengthen women’s economic equality. Anti-choice policies are most damaging to the low-income constituents that Democratic politicians say they want to support. Regardless of personal beliefs, we call on all Democrats to stand firm in respecting the autonomy of women to make decisions about their own bodies, and to support policies that allow them full access to reproductive healthcare.” – Sarah Croucher,
Executive Director, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut
“In coalition with the progressive organizations supporting these principles, Planned Parenthood Votes! Connecticut shares the vision that reproductive health and rights are inextricably linked to the values of economic justice, racial and ethnic justice, and gender equality.
If the election of 2016 has taught us anything, it is the powerful need to understand how vital issues and their movements intersect. Given current battles in Washington, D.C. and Hartford, and those we have yet to fight, candidates and office holders can no longer stand with us on abortion rights, but against us on the policies and programs that offer everyone the opportunities and resources necessary to thrive.Likewise, a credible progressive cannot stand for economic justice and oppose reproductive rights. Taking either of these stances holistically weakens the welfare of women. Planned Parenthood stands with organizations, community partners, and progressive candidates who believe a person’s autonomy over their own body is a basic human right.” – Planned Parenthood Votes Connecticut
“Every day Hartford GYN Center cares for Connecticut voters by providing dignified and compassionate abortions. We call upon the DCCC to represent and honor our patients’ experiences in Hartford and D.C.” – Hartford GYN Center
“Just like we expect the Democratic Party to stand by the values of equality, economic opportunity for all, and access to healthcare, we also expect it to protect a woman’s reproductive freedom. You can’t have it both ways; you can’t say that you will fight for women and then exclude one of our most fundamental rights when it is convenient.” – Evelyn Mantilla, CT Latinas in the Resistance
“The DCCC, and all democratic leadership, must treat abortion as a personal decision, not a political one. Broaden the coalition with candidates who respect women and our right to access safe & legal abortion. If you want to stand with us, stand for us.” – Jillian Gilchrest, co-organizer, Women’s March Connecticut.
The legislative arm of NARAL works to pass pro-choice legislation and defend against anti-choice legislation at the State Capitol, believing strongly that all women have the right to access the full range of reproductive choices including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.

Customers of Wells Fargo said the bank withdrew automatic payments twice Wednesday, leading to problems with their accounts. Reports from New Jersey and Texas said customers had payments deducted twice and had to wait hours on the phone to talk to customer service. The Austin Statesman reported, “In some cases, that sent customers’ balances to zero — or below zero — and triggered the possibility of overdraft protection fees. Some customers received email notices telling them that they now had […]
