CRIS Radio is now being made available to nearly 300 residents of Sheriden Woods Health Care Center in Bristol and Southington Care Center in Southington, thanks to a grant from the Bristol General Grant Fund at Main Street Community Foundation.

CRIS Radio, a 39-year-old nonprofit, is a radio-reading service for people who are blind, have low vision, or unable to read due to other print disabilities.

Residents of these facilities are now able to listen to their favorite newspapers and magazines 24 hours a day, seven days a week through specially tuned CRIS Radio (Connecticut Radio Information System) internet radios that stream articles published in more than 50 newspapers and magazines.

Local, national and international news, sports, obituaries, and store sales flyers featured in the Hartford Courant, New York Times, Journal Inquirer, New Britain Herald, and USA Today are broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition to recording newspapers and magazines, CRIS also records classroom materials and children’s magazines for students with print disabilities, provides audible tours for museums to improve access within the community for people unable to read, and streams a dedicated audio line-up of Spanish-language newspapers and magazines.

Thanks to nearly 300 volunteers, all CRIS recordings feature human narration.

Applications for the free service can be downloaded from the CRIS Radio website,
