Councilors object to last minute pay raise meeting, urges public to attend

Bristol City Hall

Bristol City Hall

Despite objections from Mary Fortier, David Preleski, and myself [Calvin Brown], the mayor’s office has scheduled a special meeting of the City Council tomorrow afternoon, January 3, 2017 at 5 PM to vote on raises for department heads and elected officials.

It goes without saying that the Democrats on the City Council strongly oppose raises for elected officials at a time of such severe economic uncertainty.

What we find even more egregious, however, is the fact that a vote on a topic as controversial as this has been scheduled for a time that makes it all but impossible for taxpayers to show up and make their voices heard on the issue, especially considering that the notice for this special meeting was posted on a holiday weekend when members of the public were unlikely to see it.

Raises for elected officials is something that easily could be taken up at the regular meeting of the City Council one week from tomorrow night when members of the public were more likely to be aware of it. As we enter 2017, we are asking for more transparency and fairness in the agendas and meetings being scheduled from the mayor’s office.

The taxpayers deserve better than this.

Signed,
Mary Fortier
David Preleski
Calvin Brown

For those looking to postpone the meeting to properly voice their concerns can call The Mayor’s Office at 860-582 6250 or e-mail kencockayne@bristolct.gov

All three brands — Fresh Foods Market, Lantana and Marketside — have pine nuts on top and come in 10-ounce packages. Knoxville, Tennessee-based House of Thaller is recalling the hummus products because ingredient supplier HVF Inc. informed the company that the roasted pine nuts may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The products were distributed from April 18 to June 13 in the United States […]

Lawmakers set aside June 29 for possible budget vote

HARTFORD — At least one group of Connecticut legislators says it’s pushing forward with a possible state budget vote before the fiscal year ends June 30, even though there’s currently no agreement. Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives said Thursday their rank-and-file members prefer voting June 29 on a new two-year-budget rather than allowing Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to use his executive authority to temporarily run state government. If no budget agreement is ready next week, House Speaker […]

He and his twin brother are the youngest of the five children in the family. Christian’s official diagnosis came when he was about four months […]
