The comment “Bristol’s all aboard the Trump Train CT to make Bristol White again.” by an account called Trump Train CT (@turbopatriot) on Twitter — now deleted —  was all it took for the Bristol Democratic Town Committee to issue a statement saying they have zero tolerance for this type of conversation in local politics.

“We’re not aboard that train; it needs to be derailed!”

“It is offensive and serves to build the proverbial wall in our community, instead of bringing people together. Someone we live next to, stand in line at the grocery store with, or send our children to school with their children is promoting racism among us. It does not represent the men and women who live and work in our community. This hateful racist rhetoric is unacceptable.” said Dean Kilbourne Chairman of Bristol Democrats.

“We do not endorse sexual harassment, bullying or racial discrimination in any shape or form. We call upon our Republican counterparts to identify the person hiding behind the Twitter name “Turbo Patriot” said Kilbourne.

Republican Town Chairman Jeffrey Caggiano in lue of these accusations said “The Bristol RTC has no tolerance for racism, hatred, vandalism or insults. It is my hope that all citizens regardless of political party marginalize and ignore such behavior.”

“I’m not an active Twitter user and have no knowledge of alleged comments, but certainly think the comments are reprehensible.” said Caggiano.

Despite not active on Twitter, Caggiano does have a Twitter account and was reached out by the inappropriate Twitter account.

DTC Chairman Kilbourne  also added “The Democratic Party has always believed in the big tent philosophy and we welcome people of every age, race and religion to our headquarters. We promise that they will find a warm welcome and people who care about the same issues they care about and candidates who are running for office to be positive role models and to make a difference in our community.

Additionally, Caggiano said, the Bristol RTC has no tolerance for racism, hatred, vandalism or insults. We have seen and been party to vandalism, insults and direct attacks against our signs and candidates. However, we have chosen to focus on the issues and “Solutions to Fix CT,” and ignore the fringe elements that cheapen the political process.

For nearly its entire existence, Twitter has not just tolerated abuse and hate speech, it’s virtually been optimized to accommodate it.

Twitter is now offering some of its most critical anti-harassment tools to every user, not just those with blue checkmarks next to their name. Now, users will be able to limit the notifications they see to only people they follow. This effectively removes any tweets from random strangers and those who use Twitter to abuse or harass.
