Bristol missed out on job creation grant

State Senate candidate and businessman Mike Nicastro highlighted another failure of his opponent state Senator Henri Martin to work to create jobs in the Bristol area by failing to inform and encourage the City’s Economic Development team to take part in the Innovation Places the most significant job creation and innovation program in Connecticut’s history.

Due to Senator Martin’s lack of leadership, Bristol missed the September 12th deadline for groups to submit a “planning grant application” to receive up to $50k to continue exploring the program’s

potential in a community. Communities across Connecticut are beginning to be notified that their application has been approved.

The new state initiative is designed to help key places in the state become magnets for talent, supporting entrepreneurship in higher education, focusing more on growth-stage companies.

It weaves together entrepreneurship support and relationship-building with physical planning and development. Earlier this year, Nicastro called on Senator Martin to take action to to ensure the Bristol area was not shutout of this opportunity.

“Once again Bristol and its surrounding communities are going to miss out on an amazing opportunity to attract jobs and new businesses, because of a complete lack of leadership by Senator Martin.” said Nicastro.  “Bristol area residents need to be able to trust that they have a senator willing to do the hard work to get our economy going.

If Henri Martin spent less time scaring his constituents about a “mileage tax” which legislative leadership has declared “dead”and he paid attention to what was going on in the senate then maybe Bristol could have been an active participant. When I am in the Senate, I will fight every day to ensure that our communities don’t get left behind.”

Passed this year by the General Assembly, this program designates funds to focus on entrepreneurship and economic development. As Innovation Places was being developed, Nicastro was called upon by the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA – who did not re-endorse Martin) to testify on the original bill and was involved with legislators on how this program should be structured and managed.

Nicastro is founder & Principal of Coppermine Advisors, LLC a firm focused on helping businesses with growth strategies, strategic planning and capital acquisition.

He was previously the President & Chief Executive Officer of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce.

Mike holds a Juris Doctor degree from Western New England University, School of Law and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Central Connecticut State University, where he is currently the Entrepreneur-in-Residence and a member of the adjunct faculty.
