Nicastro: Martin shows lack of support for women & families

State Senate candidate Mike Nicastro during a debate sponsored by the Plainville Chamber of Commerce earlier this week said current Republican Senator Martin showed his lack of support for women and families when asked about the concept of family leave.

His comment of “I’m totally against this” and his concern of how much this would cost him made it clear that he sees employees as nothing more than expenses and not an asset to be invested in said Nicastro in a press release.

During the debate, Nicastro said Senator Martin had a confused record on economic development.

Armed with examples, Nicastro said Martin voted against Small Businesses Express and STEP-Up. Both are job training and creation programs.

“Those programs have helped businesses create and retain 1,452 number of jobs in the 31st Senate District.” said Nicastro

Nicastro pushed that in 2016, Sen. Martin backed a last minute budget that would have delivered the largest cut to higher education in our nation’s history, would have cost 8,000 construction jobs and was still out of balance by $150 million.

“In order to attract more jobs we need an educated work force,” stressed Nicastro.

“That’s why I will work to make college more affordable by freezing in-state tuition at our public universities and expanding financing options, including grants and loans so everyone has access to high quality education.”

In the same year Nicastro says Martin voted against the creation of a landmark program to help cities like Bristol attract high-growth companies through the creation of “Innovation Places.”

Due to Sen. Martin’s lack of leadership, Bristol missed out on critical planning stage funding to help bring more good-paying jobs to the area said Nicastro.

Nicastro said in February of 2015 Sen. Martin complained vehemently to the local press about a budget proposal which would have eliminated certain tax credits for ESPN.

He stated, “I feel like it’s a broken promise,” and “We’re making it difficult for them to believe anything the state promises.” Now in his latest plan, “A Confident Future” he calls for an end to all “Corporate Welfare” including the same tax credits he defended just last year.

“Residents of the 31st District need someone that will fight for them in Hartford. Unfortunately, Henri has consistently voted against critical programs which provide job training, educate workers and assist small business with job creation.” said Nicastro.

State Senator Henri Martin currently represents Connecticut’s 31st Senatorial District, which includes Bristol, Harwinton, Plainville, Plymouth and Thomaston. Martin is the owner of Henri Martin Real Estate and Broad Street Self Storage. Martin was also a two-term Bristol city councilperson.
