Henri Martin and Whit Betts political sign in Bristol

State Representative candidate Krystal Myers and State Senate candidate Mike Nicastro said in a joint press release they are expressing their deep concern over the recent canceling of a scheduled forum intended to give students the opportunity to ask local candidates questions regarding the political process.

The forum was scheduled to take place Tuesday October 18th at 6:30 pm in the Terryville High school auditorium.

Student council members were going be able to ask 5-7 questions to each candidate about how the political process. Students were in the process of preparing questions for the candidates until the event was unexpectedly cancelled on Friday October 14th after republicans had the event cancelled.

“This is how young people become cynical about the political process, politicians like Senator Henri Martin talk about what they want to do for young people but then refuse to actually speak with them,” said Nicastro.

“These high school students are literally our future workforce and are the future of our economy. I can’t imagine anyone intentionally passing-up an opportunity to hear directly from young people about the investments we need to make in education and job training. If you can’t handle tough questions from high school students how are you going to answer to the voters?”

Krystal Myers said she is disappointed in Betts’ dismissive reason for declining an invitation to a debate hosted by local students who have done their research, and worked hard on their questions.

“The incumbent’s reason for refusal to debate, and have an open dialogue, should leave students and their parents questioning Betts’ dedication to education.”

Myers continued, “Regardless, my campaign will be reaching out to the Plymouth school system to set up a meet and greet event where I can answer the student’s questions. I value their views just like I will value the opinions of my constituents once elected. Our community deserves a leader that listens to them, and will fight for them in Hartford.”

Nicastro concluded. “Henri Martin owes the students and their parents an apology and an explanation for why he does not value their issues or questions and why he and Betts used political pressure to have the event canceled.”
