Former long-time Bristol Press reporter takes new job in Maine

Steve Collins

Steve Collins

On Christmas Eve of last year, Steve Collins suddenly and unexpectedly resigned from the Bristol Press.

Collins at the time said “In sum, the owner of my paper is guilty of journalistic misconduct of epic proportions. There is no excusing this behavior. A newspaper editor cannot be allowed to stamp on the most basic rules of journalism and pay no price. He should be shunned by my colleagues, cut off by professional organizations and told to pound sand by anyone working for him who has integrity. So I quit.”

The sudden departure was covered by the Courant and the Washington Post.

An article by TPM even asked: So who is Michael Schroeder, in addition to being the owner and publisher of The Bristol Press?

Last week Collins announced he took a position with the Sun Journal in Maine. Collins will cover state government and politics while dividing his time between Augusta, the capital of Maine, and Lewiston.

The Sun Journal is a daily newspaper published in Lewiston and covers the western section of Maine.

Collins covered Bristol for over two decades poking and prodding elected officials and city heads for information diligently. Collins knew how Bristol ticked and what questions to ask.

Before his departure from Connecticut, Collins said:

“It’s a bittersweet feeling to move away from Connecticut after a long career at The Bristol Press. After all, this has been my home my entire married life, the only place my two children, born in Bristol, have ever lived. But it’s exciting to start a new reporting job covering the Maine State House for a great daily in Lewiston, a city that reminds me in many ways of Bristol.

It could use an ESPN in town, though. Maine’s a great place for political news these days so I’m looking forward to the opportunity.

I wish that the publisher of the Press, Michael Schroeder, had never gotten involved with Sheldon Adelson and the Las Vegas newspaper.

I also wish he had not chosen to shred nearly ethical rule that governs journalism. He left me with no option last Christmas Eve except to resign in protest, adding my voice to others across the nation protesting the travesty that Schroeder and Adelson perpetrated on our profession.

I felt awful giving up my job in Bristol, but I had to do the right thing. I trust I’ll never again work for people who put ethics at risk.”

The Sun Journal announced the addition of Collins and offers his accomplishments including Youth Journalism International.

The article also states the Bristol Press is now owned by News & Media Capital Group, the same company buying the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Teigen responded by saying it was only a photo, and that she and her daughter never actually rode the slide. This story is not intended to make a judgment on Teigen either way, but […]
