Bristol Hospital to Offer Low-Cost Cooking

Does your cooking need a little inspiration? Do you have trouble finding meals the whole family will love? Do you want to eat healthier without breaking the bank? Want to learn about what portion sizes you should be eating?

If so, join Bristol Hospital food and nutrition experts for this new series. Learn the how to use fiber-rich grains, enjoy enticing fruit and vegetable recipes and integrate more plant-based proteins into your diet. Classes include a cooking demo, food samples and a nutrition lesson. The last class ties it all together with a focus on balancing your personal plate based on your health goals. Each week you will receive groceries so that you can try a recipe at home with your family.

Classes include the following:

•Great Grains: Tired of pasta and white rice? (Thursday, October 20, 2016)
Learn how to identify and cook with whole grain foods like oats, quinoa and brown rice. Discover how to add healthy grains to your diet with recipes that your family will love. Sample nutritious and delicious grain alternatives, and discover why these and other healthy grains are essential for optimal energy, fiber and weight control.

•Fun with Fruits & Vegetables (Thursday, October 27, 2016)
Learn easy ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your diet with simple and tasty recipes. You will sample fruit and vegetable based dishes for everyday use. You will leave class with easy & tasty recipes and groceries to try at home with your family.

•Protein Power (Thursday, November 3, 2016)
Meatless meals are tasty and affordable everyday alternates. Plant-based proteins are nature’s nutrient powerhouses. Learn the health benefits of using beans, lentils, nuts and soy. Sample a delicious meat-free entrée and get recipes and groceries for home.

•Your Personal Plate (Thursday, November 10, 2016)
Work with our nutrition professionals to build your personal plate and help curb weight gain or even lose weight using the MyPlate resource.

This series – Fun, Fast and Frugal Foods – will run on Thursdays starting October 20 through November 10, 2016 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at the Parent and Child Center (9 Prospect Street, Bristol). The discounted fee for the entire series is $26, or individual classes can be taken for $7 each. A sliding fee scale and scholarships are available to low-income families thanks to grants from the United Way of West Central Connecticut. DANIELSON —  A Danielson man is facing criminal charges after police said he sexually a girl when she was 11-years-old. On August 21, 2017, Danielson police said Shad Morin, 41, was taken into custody and charged with sexual assault in the first degree and risk of injury to a minor.
