There will be a road closure this Saturday, October 1, 2016 and Sunday, October 2, 2016 for the Soap Box Derby Bristol Local Race.

James P. Casey will be closed from Eastwood Road to Perkins Street from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for both days.

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934.

The idea of the Soap Box Derby grew out of a photographic assignment of Dayton, Ohio, newsman Myron Scott . He covered a race of boy-built cars in his home community and was so impressed with this event that he acquired a copyright for the idea and began development of a similar program on a national scale.

The first mention of the program locally appeared in The Bristol Press files in 1936.  when Morris LaMothe was the winner of the Soap Box Derby on Park Hill Road. The event was part of Fourth of July events in the vicinity of Rockwell Park and Muzzy Field, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Bristol. Louis Kozikowski was second and Albert Riccio was third.
