Bristol receives firefighters grant program

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security, under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has awarded a Fire Prevention and Safety grant to the Bristol Fire Department in the amount of $169,048.

The grant is intended to support a program of smoke detector installations and education about fire safety that will reduce the incidence of injury and property loss in older residences.

The proposal will involve outreach from all fire stations in the City, as well as community groups who will distribute information and applications to residents about the program. Eligible families will schedule a visit with the nearest Fire Station, which will include a home inspection as well as the installation of two smoke detectors and one combination smoke – carbon monoxide detector by the team. The installation of 10-year, tamper-proof smoke detectors is free.

“We anticipate that the partnership between the Fire Department and community organizations, such as the West End Association and the Forestville Village Association, will make this project a success for the City,” said Fire Chief Jay Kolakoski. “We’re very anxious to get started on this and reach as many folks as we can with this grant.”

Fire Marshal Robert Grimaldi will be spearheading the project for the Department. Program announcements will be forthcoming on the City’s website and in local media, as well as on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Lawmakers set aside June 29 for possible budget vote

HARTFORD — At least one group of Connecticut legislators says it’s pushing forward with a possible state budget vote before the fiscal year ends June 30, even though there’s currently no agreement. Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives said Thursday their rank-and-file members prefer voting June 29 on a new two-year-budget rather than allowing Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to use his executive authority to temporarily run state government. If no budget agreement is ready next week, House Speaker […]
